I think it's because you're an outsider that you can understand the charm and the things you can do. Local people may not necessarily know the most about their local area.

This is an auberge-style inn located on Oki Island in Shimane Prefecture, where you can rent the entire building.
We stayed here on a family anniversary.
Since our children are still young, it's difficult for us to enjoy a proper restaurant meal. But it was a great place for parents, allowing adults to relax and enjoy delicious Italian food and drinks. (Another great feature was the natural wines stocked in the in-room wine cellar!)
With an airport on the island, access was surprisingly easy. I'd like to save up some miles and return for another stay on our next anniversary!
There are plenty of delicious restaurants in the city, but if you're not in the mood for that, if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself in nature for a bit, but don't want to give up on delicious food, this is the perfect inn for you.
If you've never been to Oki Island before, I highly recommend staying for several nights. It's a good idea to ask the owner for recommendations on the island, and I'm sure the people of Oki will also be able to tell you about some rare spots. I also recommend enjoying the island as if it were a role-playing game.
It's a joy to see how wild nuts, herbs, and fish are transformed into dishes like this, and it's rare to be able to have this experience all to yourself in the comfortable space of a private lodge.
The chef's extensive discussions about food and wine are also enjoyable, so I recommend the wine pairing course!
A new inn that just opened in November 2023, located in a village called "Igo" in the northernmost part of the island, 30 minutes by car from Saigo Port on Oki Island.
This is a private inn where only one group can rent out the whole house per day, but instead of the usual vacation rentals where you can self-check in and check out and do whatever you like, the basic plan includes one dinner. During our stay, we started with a welcome drink, had free snacks in the refrigerator, and added amenities little by little.We enjoyed a new way of staying at this luxury lodge full of small features.
■Location
Oki Island itself is a very difficult place to reach, but the inn is located in the northern village farthest from the port. However, the northern part of the island is very scenic, and the village is located on a hill overlooking the sea, forest, and white rock surface.
The view from the window of the inn is the forest and garden, but from within the premises you can overlook the blue sea and the private vegetable garden.
Access itself is inconvenient, but unlike the relatively developed atmosphere around the port, you can take a stroll and enjoy the breathtaking scenery, and you can also take a bus from the port, albeit infrequently. If you're mainly staying at an inn, I think it's a good idea to go by bus instead of renting a car. (I have been to Oki Island several times, and I think the scenery around here is enough to fully enjoy the island!)
■Facilities
The building is a renovated old folk house, with a floor plan of a dirt floor restaurant space and a 1LDK living space. The living/dining room was made up of three old rooms, and it was a modern Japanese-style space with a tasteful mix of old furniture and new, and it was a very cozy and wonderful space! It's not too spacious even for two people, and there's a raised tatami floor, so it's perfect for families traveling with children. The bath was also high-tech, with a wide window that allowed you to see the greenery of the mountain behind the bath, and the light control could be changed, so I was able to enjoy a relaxing bath time. One thing, it's a little inconvenient that the toilet doesn't have a hand washing station and you have to use the bathroom sink.
■Dinner
For dinner, a private chef will prepare an Italian course at the inn's private counter kitchen. What's unique about this restaurant is that it's reserved for private use, but rather than having the atmosphere of an intimidating restaurant, you can enjoy it as if you were enjoying a lively glass of wine with friends while snacking on delicious food that goes well with alcohol at the bistro counter! It feels like an inn dedicated to drinkers who love wine and delicious food!
The food is an Italian omakase course, but rather than a simple Italian dish, it is a summative dish that combines a variety of Tuscan-style ingredients. We had fresh seasonal red crab pasta, stewed quail meat, etc., and they all had flavors that went well with the wine. lol
Wine is available for an additional charge, starting at 6,000 yen per bottle. We have a lot of stock in addition to the menu, and if you tell the chef, who is also a sommelier, your preferences, he will choose from the cellar what goes well with your dish! The chef is also a wonderful person who is not too formal and is very frank.
The amount of food is quite large, but you can adjust the amount of the two types of pasta provided, and if you have a preference, such as likes or dislikes, you can request it at the time of reservation and they will arrange the menu to suit your needs!
■Breakfast
Breakfast is an extra charge of 2,500 yen, but there are no shops in the area, and it's different from the Italian dinner, but it's country cuisine that goes well with rice and is full of homemade fermented foods, so it's recommended! The plates and bowls were also elaborate and I was satisfied with the appearance!

■Price
Personally, I don't usually like to spend a lot of money on accommodations, and I don't normally stay at accommodations that cost more than 25,000 yen per person per night, but if it included meals... that's why I made the reservation. In the end, we made the right decision, and it was more of an "experience" than an "accommodation." Not only did we enjoy the space as an inn, but we also had dinner at the bistro and relaxing in our room after dinner, so we were able to spend a very satisfying and enjoyable time!
This time I stayed for one night, but it's the type of inn where you want to enjoy your stay just by relaxing and walking around the inn, so next time I'd really like to stay for more than one night!
